I was asked by many in my PM's about school so I thought I'd say something about it.
I attended school in NC at the Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, NC. It was a amazing track, it's a 4/10 mile clay oval. I was there for the day and really enjoyed the teaching of Brian Tyler. He is a two-time USAC National Sprint Car Champion. He's been racing for 26 years and does it ever show when you see him race. He's got quite the impressive recoed for what he does. Right now he's racing in the ARCA races and his finishes are awesome.
The car that I drove ran on Alcohol and was a Maxim chassis and it did not have a wing on at the time I drove it. I actually like non wing sometimes it's so fun to do.He said to me all we need to do is slap a wing on and I coul run with the WoO! Now to me , that was cool to hear. I always dreamed about running one.
My times improved, lines got better and all my issues are resolved. Now all I have to do is wait until the 25th of april to really try it out in pratice. _________________ winggirl71 - Kristen

Those Sprint Cars are awesome. I don't know of any track around where I live that runs full size Sprints. Hammerdown Speedway in NC runs micro-sprints. That school isn't too expensive is it? I think I checked it out on the web one time. The school I saw you had a choice of driving a Dirt Late Model, Open wheel modified, or Sprint. Glad you enjoyed yourself. _________________ J.D. Green

Someday, I'll be going to somekind of school. If they have a school for asphalt mods I'd like to go...being that that's what we are moving up to next season. _________________ Rob Gray

dont need school to racing, in my opinion waste of cash, best way to learn is on the track, and for mods all you do is put it in high gear and go |

well that's your opinion and all I have to say is it's NOT A WASTE OF MONEY when you can learn the RIGHT way to drive. Learning is a great way to IMPROVE. To have someone of 27 years of expearence that has driven everything from karts to late mods to me is awesome!
So, if Rob wants to someday take a class for mods? well, thats HIS choice and it's a very wise one at that _________________ winggirl71 - Kristen

And too those schools are somewhat of a "Jeff Gordon Driving Experience" if you will. People that can't afford to buy their own Sprint, Dirt Late Model, or Open Wheel can pay a fair price and feel what it's like to wheel one of those awesome machines around the track.
Nobody was ever born a professional race car driver. There are people who have a lot of natural talent, but even they have talked to other drivers and gotten their perspective on things. Granted there are many of us local race guys who will never be professionals, but you can't knock someone for wanting to learn as much as they can about something they love. And even novice drivers may prevent their selves from picking up bad habits by going to a school and learning the proper techniques to start with. You may even go to the "driving" school and learn a setup tip or two. I really don't feel that it is a waste of time or money any way you look at it. _________________ J.D. Green

Oh I can see you're one of those guys Robby. "I'm 16 and have more racing experience then you do". I think you are gonna have a nice learning experience this season in the mods. As far as going to a school, I could look up a list of drivers that have attended driving schools in the past....Jeff Gordon for one. He went to FASTRAK to learn the proper way to drive a 3,400 lb racecar on asphalt. Yep, I guess he wasted his money because it just never worked out for that guy huh?
The school that I'm interested in teaches set up basics in a classroom and has you drive.
I'm always open to learning new stuff and shortening my learning curve.....it could take years to learn things on your own and just a few days if someone tells you what you are looking for. _________________ Rob Gray

wow, this discussion could go on all day long and still not be resolved. LOL
I think I will post a sticky on the other forums just to see what everyones opinion is.But of course I'm gonna through mine in here LOL
You do not NEED to go to a driving school to be a good or even great driver.Yes Jeff Gordon did attend a school, but he had already raced for many years first.Dale senior, IMO the best driver to ever hit the track did not go to school, nor even finish high school. If a driving school really taught you how to drive a racecar, you would think maybe some of the cup car owners would just find some youngsters, send them to school and put them in a car.Experience is how you learn to drive a racecar.I can drive any type of car on dirt or asphalt, but I can't drive a video game car for crap, because, I can't FEEL the car, and you can't learn feel in a school.
With that being said, will school help you? Yes it will, if you have a good teacher.School will shorten the time it takes for you to learn how to drive.Yes the track is the best school, but when rookies are at the track and they ask questions, they are in school. Maybe not a classroom setting, but it is still school.
Design,fabrication,set-up, aero, ect... can all be taught in school, but driving requires experience but does not require school. Think about it, if you had two people wanting to drive your car for a race you could not compete in, but needed the car to run, and run up front. Would you pick the one who had just finished a driving school ( not on your track either) or would you pick the one that had been driving racecars for 5 years?
Bottom line-IMO
Need school-no, but it will shorten the time for you to become a better driver. And remember, where you go to school, most of the time, is not where you race, so the car will be different anyway. _________________ www.starvingracers.forumsland.com
