|
|
Okay, tbr75 wanted me to re-post the tire tech stuff I had in my blogs on SR. So blame him for this thread.
Why I grind tires:
A lot of it has to do with the fact our tires have tread on them. For those running DOT tires I think you would get more from siping your tires and then scuffing them just to expose the new rubber since they are so hard compared to the softer compound racing tires.
#1 Our tires have tread on them and grinding them in the correct direction will "sharpen" the leading edge of the tread block (right side of block as the tire would be on the car) again. By sharpen I mean remove the rounded edges that develop especially if the tire was on the verge of being over-worked or over-heated. "Sharp" leading edges provide more traction as they can "dig" into the track more than a rounded edge. The way I explained I grind tires on Sunday will sharpen the leading edge of the tread blocks.
#2 Reason is to expose the "fresh" rubber of the tire again. If a tire has been thru a heat cycle (run on the track long enough to build heat in the tire) as it cools back down the surface of the tire will hardend and "glaze" over. If a tire has been sitting around, exposed to the sun for periods of time it do the same thing as the oils in the very surface of the tire evaporate.
#3 Remove "feathering". As our tires wear they develop what I call feathers of tread on the inner edge (non leading edge) of a tread block. Grinding the tire removes the so it doesn't interfer with the surface of the tire.
#4 Grinding NEW Tires. If you mount up a new tire for the feature that has not been run at all it is vital that you grind it to put it through a heat cycle. Otherwise it will more than likely be blistered and worse the leading edges of the tread blocks torn or chucked when you come back from the feature. In this case you WANT to run the grinder fast enough to smoke the tire so it is giving it a heat cycle.
Please add your thoughts/tricks/comments so I can learn from you guys as well. _________________ Standing on the LOUD pedal for all she's got!! |

Instead of grinding on a new set of tires.. you can also take a hard bristled wire brush to them to clean that outer shine off of it.
I run on stock tires and believe me they have a nice shine on them when i get them. _________________ Darrell Holtzlander

I'm buying a disk specifically for grinding tires this year. I'm gonna get every last lap out of my tires this year! |
Hey Rob, if you are getting the carbide one that looks like it would take the meat off your finger to the bone in the blink of eye BE VERY CAREFULL with it. One of my buddies (#44J 2nd in National AMRA Modifeid points last 2 years) uses that particular one. He said it works great but goes thru the tires quick! Just thought I would throw that out there. _________________ Standing on the LOUD pedal for all she's got!! |

I use a 36 grit disc for the grinder (variable speed) and it dont hesitate to cut to the bone either so keep your fingers clear |

I use the same thing as Ray, 36 grit paper disc on a 8" variable speed grinder. Seems to take plenty of rubber off without over doing it. _________________ Standing on the LOUD pedal for all she's got!! |

Hey maybe you can explain the difference between hoosiers and american racers and talk a little about compounds too. I know my tires are gonna be out of rubber soon if i dont quit grinding them! |

Do you run an 8" tire?
Hope the rain holds off for you this weekend. Our Saturday is supposed to be the best day so hopefully for you too.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY GOOD LUCK!! _________________ Standing on the LOUD pedal for all she's got!! |

I run a 28.5 11.0-15 american racers usually 38 or softer unless its dry where we are running tomorrow they have a 44 or harder rule. I use to run 29.0's and found on a 10 inch rim they would baloon in the center at high speeds causing less grip |
