Spring target date for T-Mac Tim McCreadie is hoping to begin a physical rehabilitation program in a few weeks with the goal of climbing back into a race car sometime during the spring.

The Watertown native is recovering at home from a serious back injury suffered in a qualifying race during the Chili Bowl in January in Tulsa, Okla. McCreadie has a burst fracture of the T3 vertebra. A burst fracture is a type of injury in which the vertebra shatters into surrounding tissue.

McCreadie recently met with Dr. Ross-Ryan Moquin, a Syracuse neurological surgeon.

"Dr. Moquin said I was quite lucky in that I wasn't paralyzed from the accident," McCreadie said last week.

Following the accident, McCreadie was seen by an orthopedic surgeon in Tulsa before flying to Indianapolis on NASCAR driver's Tony Stewart's private plane. He was accompanied to Indianapolis by Watertown native James Spink who was attending the Chili Bowl. Spink is promotional director for the United States Automobile Club (USAC) with headquarters in Indianapolis.

McCreadie had a consultation with Dr. Terry Trammell, a renowned orthopedic surgeon in shortly after arriving in Indianapolis.

"I am scheduled to see Dr. Trammell again on April 24," McCreadie said. "Hopefully, I will be able to start the rehab program of walking on a treadmill and swimming."

McCreadie has received several letters and cards from well-wishers, both from the north country as well as from those in NASCAR.

"I just want to thank everyone who has send me words of encouragement," McCreadie said.

USAC, along with Chili Bowl officials, are helping to raise funds to help McCreadie pay for the medical bills. McCreadie does not have health insurance.

Julie and Tony Verne and Mark Webb are holding a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser on March 7 at the North Side Improvement League to help raise some money. Another fund-raiser for McCreadie is scheduled for March 14 at the Evans Mills Fire Hall. For additional information, call Dale Munn at 520-0537.

Fellow World of Outlaws late model drivers Josh Richards and Steve Francis are hoping they can help out McCreadie by winning the Alltel DIRTcar All-Star Cash voting contest. Voting via text message or on-line (www.alltelallstar.com) ended on Saturday.

Both drivers made it clear after wins in Florida recently that if they win the popular vote, they will transfer the money won to support the fund for McCreadie.

Nice to know he is on the way to recovery. That was a nasty looking wreck flipping that many times and up over the catch fence. I've always like watching him run in that late model, usually on the rail!

That's good news. Heard about that wreck. Didn't actually get to see it. I hate to hear about any body getting hurt. Even the racers I don't like.
